Headset Touching the Stock? Start Here

Don’t assume ClayProVR does not fit. This is usually a clearance issue, and it is normally fixable.

Start with the headset adjustments first. If the headset still touches the stock, the mount may need a slightly lighter and cleaner cheek connection.

Fast answer:
First, tilt the headset slightly upward. If needed, raise the headset 1–2 cm and fine-tune the gun setup again. If it still touches, use a lighter cheek connection so the stock comes to your face instead of forcing your face down into the stock.

1. Headset Adjustments

Fix the simple things first. Most clearance issues are solved here.

Adjustment 1:
Tilt The Headset Slightly Upward

A small upward tilt can create more space between the headset and the stock.

  • Less pressure around the eyes
  • About 1 cm more clearance
  • Often enough to solve the issue

Adjustment 2:
Raise The Headset 1–2 cm

If tilting is not enough, raise the headset slightly and tighten the strap so it stays stable.

  • Creates more stock clearance
  • Keeps the headset away from the comb
  • Raise the headset as high as possible without losing a clear image

Important: After moving the headset, go back into Clay Hunt VR and fine-tune the gun alignment. The gun setup works like a small seesaw around the receiver/controller area, so do not perfect one point in isolation. Bring the full picture closer together with small adjustments.

2. When The Mount Is The Real Cause

If the headset still touches after the headset adjustments, the headset may not be the real problem. The mount may be too high, too deep, or using too much cheek pressure.

Head Tilt Over The Comb

The head moves to the gun instead of the gun coming to the face.

  • Less headset clearance
  • More neck tension
  • Less repeatable mount

Dive Into The Stock

This is the “force it” move. It can feel committed, but it often adds unnecessary pressure.

  • Crushed face pressure
  • Tension around eyes and neck
  • No space for the headset

Correct: Stock To Cheek

The gun comes to a stable head. The cheek connection is light, repeatable, and relaxed.

  • More headset clearance
  • Less face and neck tension
  • More repeatable gun mount

3. The Long-Term Fix

If headset clearance is still a problem, take the bull by the horns.

The long-term fix is usually a lighter cheek pressure and a cleaner mount.

This is not a downgrade. Many top shooters use a light, repeatable cheek connection. You do not need to crush your face into the stock to shoot well.

You are not aiming.
You are pointing.
The clay is the job. The rib is not.

It does not matter how high your eye is above the rib, as long as the position is consistent and your eye is straight over the rib.

The upside is clear: A lighter mount gives more room for the headset, less tension around the face and neck, and a cleaner visual connection with the clay.

On the range, changing a mount can feel risky because shells, targets, travel, and time all cost money. With ClayProVR, you can repeat the new mount hundreds or thousands of times at home.

Be brave and do it properly. If you train the cleaner mount consistently, it can start to feel normal surprisingly fast. For many shooters, two focused weeks of VR repetitions can make the new mount feel automatic.

The goal is not to create a strange VR-only mount. The goal is to create a cleaner mount that works in VR and supports better real shooting.

4. How To Train The Adjustment

Do not rush this. If you force a change too quickly, your scores may drop — and then you may revert. Do it in phases.

Step 1 — Controlled Reps

For the first 500 shots, it is okay to be slightly conscious of the mount.

  • Mount slightly less deep into the stock
  • Keep cheek pressure light
  • Keep pressure away from the eyes and headset
  • Find the same contact point every time

Forget score - Build consistency first.

Step 2 — Transition

Now shift attention away from the mount and back to the target.

  • Less attention on the mount
  • More attention on the clay
  • Let the system recalibrate

Stay patient. The corrected mount will start to feel normal.

Step 3 — Pure Execution

This is the end state.

  • No thoughts about the mount
  • No checking the rib
  • No mechanical thinking
  • Full attention on the clay

Everything else runs automatically.

The Rule

If you are aware of the rib → you are too conscious.

If you are aware of your movement → you are interfering.

If you just see and move → you are doing it right.
